TRAVELLING

First of all, you need a flight to Tenerife South, going from almost any UK airport with the widest choice on Tuesdays and    Fridays. If a cheap deal means you prefer to fly to Tenerife North, there is a daily flight to La Gomera  which leaves at 16.45 and costs €64 one way. It is still possible to get a ferry, but the bus from the airport to Los Cristianos involves one change in Santa Cruz and takes at least an hour. The cost of a taxi would almost certainly wipe out any saving on the airfare.

Taxis from Tenerife South to Ferry Gomera take 15-20 minutes and cost a little over €20.The 111 bus leaves hourly from opposite the terminal building, and the fare to Los Cristianos is €1,85. About two a day go all the way to the port, otherwise it is a 10-15 minute walk from the central bus station - no building, just lots of bus stops with shelters. Head back down the hill, take the crossing over the dual carriageway immediately after the last bus stop. Keep straight ahead, then a quick left and right passing the BP garage to your right. After that, keep straight ahead until you emerge on the sea front and head around the harbour to the ferry terminal opposite.

Three ferries go to La Gomera, The Fred Olsen Benchigua Express, the Armas and the smaller Benchi, which goes on from San Sebastian to Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. Ferry times seem to be subject to fairly frequent changes at the moment, so it is worth checking on www.gomera.info .Public holidays and weekends are the least well served. If you are not hiring a car, you can take a bus - €6 - or taxi - about €50 - from San Sebastian to Valle Gran Rey, but the bus service is limited and does not meet all ferries. The bus service is almost exclusively a link with the ferries and is therefore not particularly convenient for walking.

We can arrange car hire, which starts at €166 per week for a Citroen C2 or Seat Panda, payable on collection, with larger cars, having radio/cassette and air-conditioning, available if required. They can also supply child seats. It is possible to collect the car at the airport in Tenerife, but the saving in taxi fare is offset by the cost of taking the car on the ferry, so it probably isn’t worth it unless you are planning to spend time on Tenerife as well as on La Gomera. Be sure to check your fuel tank on arrival; they expect the car to be returned with a similar amount, and if you need to fill up there is a gasolinera on the right as you leave San Sebastian, by the cross roads where you turn left for Valle Gran Rey. Insurance is included, with a damage excess of €250 for smaller cars and €400 for larger ones. This will not be enforced unreasonably, but can also be waived for an additional €3 per day.
